Mücahit Birinci, who was referred to disciplinary action with a request for "definitive expulsion" due to the allegation that he "offered to obtain benefits by using his political influence" regarding businessman Murat Kapki, who is detained in the corruption investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), and for making insulting posts on social media, announced that he has resigned from his party.
The AK Party Istanbul Provincial Presidency decided to discipline party member Lawyer Mücahit Birinci due to the allegation that he 'offered to use his political influence to obtain benefits' for businessman Murat Kapki, who is in custody as part of the corruption investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), and for making defamatory posts on social media. The decision, taken unanimously, stated that Birinci acted contrary to Article 117 of the party's statute.
ANNOUNCED HIS RESIGNATION Following the decision, Birinci announced that he had resigned from his party. In a statement he made on his social media account, he said: "As a party member who has served at every level of the organization, I respectfully inform the public that I have resigned from my party membership, which I am proud of, and from active politics, as I see it necessary. I will continue to see our esteemed President as a fatherly friend, a great Leader, and as the Guardian of the Believers from my perspective. It should be known that I will not hesitate for a moment to stand by my Leader wherever and whenever needed. With this opportunity, I hope to spend more time with my children, my mother, and my family. I forgive all my brothers. Best regards."
WHAT HAPPENED? CHP Chairman Özgür Özel claimed that Mücahit Birinci visited businessman Murat Kapki, who was arrested in the IMM investigation, in prison and said, "Sign this statement, give 2 million dollars, and leave." Following Özel's statements, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated an ex officio investigation regarding the allegation.
Kapki, who was questioned as part of the investigation, claimed that Birinci had previously expressed a desire to meet with him through someone else and indicated that he could arrange for his release. Stating that he met with Birinci thinking he could be released, Kapki said, "He brought me a 1.5-page computer-written text in 2 copies and told me to read it. The content of these texts included 4 items written in my petition titled 'this is my complaint.' When I read these, I said that 'I cannot slander anyone' and stated that the matters mentioned in the text were not true." Kapki added, "After that, he took the texts he brought with him from me. When he was about to leave, I asked him whether I would be released or not. Lawyer Mücahit Birinci said, 'This is your choice' and left my side."
Murat Kapki HAD A DISPUTE WITH NEDİM ŞENER, INSULTS FLEW IN THE AIR Moreover, it was claimed that the name of Hürriyet writer Nedim Şener was also mentioned in the conversations allegedly held between Mücahit Birinci and Murat Kapki. Following this, Şener and Birinci clashed on social media. Responding to Şener, who said to him, "I will shove that letter up your a**," Birinci replied, "You a**! Did you think I was scared of you, the mustached FETÖ member?" In response to Birinci's reply, Şener said, "I wish you had as much courage as the men you belittled as mustached." Mücahit Birinci stated that he would not file a criminal complaint against Nedim Şener, saying, "It's not my weight class," while Şener indicated that he had filed a criminal complaint against Birinci.
