Smartphone IMEI numbers that do not receive network signals for a year will be deactivated on December 31, 2025. While the regulation is expected to affect millions of devices, experts have warned users that it is essential for phones that have not been used for a long time to be turned on and receive a signal.
The application, which came into effect for the first time in 2024, is being reintroduced this year. Accordingly, the IMEI numbers of smartphones that do not receive any network signal throughout a calendar year will be suspended.
MILLIONS OF DEVICES WILL HAVE RESTRICTED USAGE
This application particularly affects devices that have been kept unused in drawers, cabinets, or attics for a long time. As part of the regulation, the usage of millions of devices will be restricted by December 31, 2025.
THE NUMBER COULD REACH 3 MILLION
Phones with suspended IMEI numbers will not be usable with a SIM card starting from the new year. It is expected that approximately 3 million phones will be affected by the application this year.
EXPERTS HAVE ISSUED WARNINGS
Technology experts recommend that to avoid being affected by the suspension process, phones that have not been used for a long time should at least be turned on and off, ensuring they connect to the network to receive a signal. If this process is not carried out, the device will be marked as "not in use" in the BTK system and will be suspended.
APPLICATION MUST BE MADE THROUGH E-GOVERNMENT
Phones with closed IMEI numbers do not become completely unusable, but an application must be made through e-Government to reactivate them. It is stated that after the application, the device will be reopened for use.
