Senator Pauline Hanson, who has been advocating for the ban on clothing that completely covers the face in public spaces in Australia for years, reignited the debate by entering the Senate session in a burqa, repeating a similar statement she made in 2017.
Pauline Hanson, a senator from Australia's right-wing party "One Nation," arrived at the Senate wearing a full-body veil. Hanson, who has been advocating for a ban on clothing that completely covers the face for years without success, later removed the veil, stating, "I am pleased to take off this veil. There is no place for a veil in Parliament."
"SUCH CLOTHING MAKES IT HARDER FOR WOMEN TO FIND JOBS"
Claiming that such garments are oppressive, hinder assimilation into Australian culture, make it harder for women to find jobs, and have no place in modern Western society, she stated that the ban on clothing that completely covers the face in public places is an important issue that needs to be discussed in modern Australia.
"THIS IS A RACIST SENATOR, CLEARLY DISPLAYING RACISM"
Other senators criticizing Hanson argued that the right-wing politician is campaigning for the erasure of religious minorities in Australia. New South Wales State Senator Mehreen Faruqi said, "This is a racist senator and is clearly displaying racism," while Independent Senator Payman from Western Australia described the demonstration as "shameful." Penny Wong also condemned Hanson's actions, stating, "She is not worthy of being a member of the Australian Senate." Hanson had previously arrived at the Senate in a similar outfit in 2017, making the same demands.
