Jeferson Luiz Sagaz (37), a soldier in Brazil, and his wife, Ana Carolina Silva (41), the owner of a manicure salon, died in the bathtub after celebrating their daughter's birthday.
The couple celebrated the birthday party at a food park. Later, they went to a nightclub and checked into the Dallas Motel in São José, Santa Catarina state, at midnight. However, the next morning, they never came to pick up their little girl. Concerned relatives called the police.
When police teams arrived, they found the couple dead in the bathtub filled with water at 50°C in their motel room. There was also a working heater in the room.
According to the investigation by the Santa Catarina State Police, the death was not caused by electric shock, drowning, or carbon monoxide poisoning. Police chief Felipe Simão Gomes stated:
"The investigations show that the death was sudden and that there was no intervention by another person. Some substances found in the body are noteworthy."
According to the toxicology report, both individuals had high levels of alcohol and cocaine in their bodies.
The couple had been together for about 20 years. Their friends described them as "loving and good parents." The police found no history of violence in their past.
Ana Carolina's family denied allegations that the young woman regularly used drugs. They suggested the possibility that cocaine may have been administered forcibly. Police chief Simão said, "The physiological makeup of both individuals may not be suitable for handling such a substance, especially under the influence of alcohol."
The report indicated that the death may have been caused by a sudden heart attack due to the effects of hot water. Chief Forensic Expert Andressa Boer Fronza explained:
"The deaths occurred due to excessive fluid loss and organ failure caused by substances taken from outside and high temperatures."
After this horrific incident, the couple's four-year-old daughter was placed with relatives. The little girl lost her parents just a few hours after the birthday party.
The incident reminded of a similar tragedy that occurred last month in Romania. A 22-year-old woman died of a heart attack while in a bathtub filled with hot water during her birthday celebration.
