The President of the Gagauzia Autonomous Region of Moldova, Evghenia Gugul, was detained and arrested at Chișinău International Airport before her planned visit to Turkey on March 25.
9 YEARS IN PRISON AND A FINE OF 2 MILLION EUROS REQUESTED
Gugul's lawyer, Sergiu Moraru, stated that during the trial at the Buiucani Court, prosecutors requested a 9-year prison sentence and a fine of 40 million Moldovan lei against Gugul.
ALLEGATION OF "ILLEGAL FINANCING FROM ORGANIZED CRIME GROUP"
Moraru reported that in the first hearing of the case, Gutul was being prosecuted for allegedly receiving illegal financing from an organized crime group linked to a political party or electoral group. Moraru stated, "There are clearly illegal situations. The dozens of folders of materials in the investigation files, especially the seized mobile phones, have still not been examined, and no concrete evidence has been presented."
GUTUL'S STATEMENT: IT WAS SAID THAT THE CASE WOULD BE DROPPED IN EXCHANGE FOR MY RESIGNATION
Evghenia Gutul, who made a statement through her lawyer, said: "It was said that the case would be dropped in exchange for my resignation from the presidency. However, I will never abandon my people. During my term, I have implemented projects that have touched the lives of tens of thousands of Gagauz families. I am just a public servant who serves her people and a mother of small children. This fight for justice is for the honor of Gagauzia and our right to live in a state based on the rule of law. The truth is on our side," she said.
