The legend used to describe the cold weather, "the cat froze in the air while jumping from roof to roof," became a reality in Hakkari. Due to the freezing temperatures that dropped to -32 degrees in the Yüksekova district, a fox searching for food was found frozen in place on a snow mass.
The severe winter conditions continuing throughout Hakkari are negatively affecting life. A striking scene occurred in the Kerem Zeydan neighborhood of the Büyükçiftlik town, which is part of the Yüksekova district, in the morning hours.
FOUND FROZEN STANDING
Residents of the neighborhood, seeing a fox motionless on the snow, which was presumed to have come down to find food, faced a painful reality when they approached the animal. It was determined that the fox, which had remained still for a long time, had frozen to death in place due to the freezing cold.
"FROZEN STANDING LIKE A STATUE"
Emphasizing the harsh winter season in the region, neighborhood head Arif Genç stated, "We saw a fox standing still on the snow mass without moving at all. At first, we expected it to run away, but when it didn’t react, we became suspicious. When we approached it, we realized that the animal was frozen standing like a statue. It’s a very sad situation. Here, nighttime temperatures can reach minus 28-30 degrees. Animals in the wild are having a hard time finding food," he said.
Authorities warned that in the region where the snow depth exceeds one meter in places and the cold intensifies, wild animals may approach residential areas. Citizens were asked to be sensitive about leaving food in suitable areas for animals struggling to find food.
