The trial of Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is detained and removed from his position as the Mayor of Istanbul, has begun regarding the allegation of "fake diploma." In the case being heard in Silivri, a prison sentence of up to 8 years and 9 months is sought for İmamoğlu, who declared his monthly income as 220,000 TL during the identification process.
Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested as part of a corruption investigation and removed from his position as the Mayor of Istanbul, has begun to be tried on the grounds that his university diploma is fake. The indictment seeks a prison sentence of up to 8 years and 9 months for İmamoğlu.
HEARING IN SILIVRI The case being heard at the Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance is taking place in the courtroom in Silivri. İmamoğlu, who is already in custody for another crime, was brought to the courtroom under the escort of gendarmerie. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, his wife Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu, his son Selim İmamoğlu, his father Hasan İmamoğlu, and many party members and deputies also attended the hearing. Slogans such as "Rights, law, justice" and "President İmamoğlu" were chanted in the courtroom.
It was observed that İmamoğlu, who was seen for the first time in a long time, had lost quite a bit of weight. REVEALED HIS MONTHLY INCOME During the identification process, İmamoğlu stated that he is married and a father of three children, and he answered "master's degree" for his educational status. In response to the judge's question, "Do you have a criminal record?" he replied, "Thank God, no." It was learned that İmamoğlu declared his monthly income as 220,000 TL.
ALLEGATIONS IN THE INDICTMENT In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was emphasized that the University College of Northern Cyprus (UCNC), where İmamoğlu studied, is not among the universities recognized by YÖK.
It was reported that in YÖK's letters dated 1988 and 1992, it was stated that only Eastern Mediterranean University is recognized in the TRNC. Additionally, the indictment alleged that the horizontal transfer quotas were unlawfully increased, with 54 students admitted to a quota of 3, and that some students were removed from the list and replaced with new ones.
REQUEST FOR PRISON SENTENCE The indictment requests that İmamoğlu be sentenced to up to 8 years and 9 months in prison for the crime of "systematic forgery of official documents."
