Ukraine's drone attack on the Taman oil terminal in Russia and the chemical plant in Perm has raised expectations of an increase in risk premiums and short-term price fluctuations in global oil markets, depending on the extent of the damage.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that Russia has carried out drone attacks on the Taman oil terminal in the Krasnodar region and a chemical plant in the Perm region. While the extent of the attack is not yet clear, the development has created a new risk headline in energy markets.

SECOND ATTACK SINCE JANUARY 22

An SBU official announced that the attack on the Taman oil terminal is the second operation against the same facility since January 22. The official has not yet shared definitive information regarding casualties and property damage following the attack. Russian authorities have also not provided detailed explanations regarding the effects of the attack.

The Taman terminal is known as one of the important export points opening to the Black Sea in southern Russia. The terminal plays a critical role, especially in the shipment of crude oil and petroleum products.

CHEMICAL PLANT IN PERM ALSO TARGETED

The SBU announced that it has also targeted a chemical plant located in the Perm region near the Ural Mountains. The region holds a strategic position in Russia's petrochemical and refinery infrastructure. The impact of the attack on production capacity is not yet clear.

RISK PREMIUM IN OIL MARKETS MAY INCREASE

Experts indicate that the impact of the attack on oil prices will depend on the extent of the damage caused at the facilities. If significant damage occurs at the Taman terminal that disrupts exports, expectations of a short-term contraction on the global supply side may put upward pressure on prices.

However, at this stage, as the duration of operational disruptions and capacity loss are unknown, cautious movement in the markets is expected. If the attacks become systematic or if there is a noticeable decline in Russia's energy exports, more severe fluctuations in oil prices may be observed. The increase in geopolitical risks, especially concerning energy security along the Black Sea route, may lead to a rise in risk premiums in the markets.
