Orhan Takmet (65) and Halide Takmet (57), who eloped 40 years ago in Mersin, wore wedding attire and held a wedding ceremony. The couple, who have 4 children and 9 grandchildren, fulfilled their dreams by having a henna night and a wedding celebration with drums and zurna.
Orhan Takmet and Halide Takmet, living in Çokoluk Plateau in the Denizciler neighborhood of Bozyazı district in Mersin, got married 40 years ago by eloping. Over the years, the couple has had 4 children and 9 grandchildren.
THEY WORE WEDDING ATTIRE 40 YEARS LATER
Knowing his wife's dream of wearing a wedding dress, Orhan Takmet began preparations for the wedding with the support of Dereköy Muhtar Gürel Bolluk and his friends to fulfill their dreams. Halide Takmet, a mother of 4, wore a traditional outfit for the henna night before the wedding. During the henna night, the couple had their first dance and then danced with the guests.
On the morning of the henna night, Halide Takmet wore her wedding dress, and her brother tied the red sash around her. Later, the couple and the guests played games accompanied by drums and zurna. The wedding, where meals were cooked in cauldrons and served to the guests, concluded with the cutting of the cake and the bride throwing her bouquet.
"IT WAS MY 40-YEAR DREAM"
Halide Takmet, who stated that they eloped to get married, said she had dreamed of wearing a wedding dress for 40 years. She noted that all the details that should be present at a wedding were fulfilled, saying, "It was my 40-year dream, and it came true. We had a henna night and a wedding, and it was very beautiful. I have 3 sons, 1 daughter, and 9 grandchildren. I am very happy."
"I HAD A DESIRE INSIDE ME"
The groom, Orhan Takmet, said, "My wife used to say, 'I couldn't wear a wedding dress.' There was a desire inside her. I told her, 'I will have you wear a wedding dress, but if we have a wedding.' She said, 'Let's do it,' and we did. My wife was very pleased before me. Because every woman has a dream of wearing a wedding dress inside her. Our advice to young people is not to run away from weddings; they should taste this happiness."
