The Egyptian army committed genocide against its own people yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, commenting on the dispersal of demonstrators and supporters of ex-president Mohamed Morsi, TRT Haber channel reported on Thursday.

Erdogan also urged the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting during which measures should be taken to prevent the killing of protesters.

In addition, the Turkish Prime Minister said that the western countries were silent before the bloody events in Egypt, thus encouraging the Egyptian army's actions against the demonstrators.

On Wednesday, the Egyptian army launched a crackdown on demonstrators and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, using military equipment and firearms.

According to the official data, the number of those killed in the clashes exceeded 280 and more than a 1000 were wounded. The leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood movement claim that about 1500 people were killed during the dispersal of demonstrations and about 10,000 civilians injured.

On July 3, Egypt's army ousted the Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, suspended the Constitution and asked the head of the Constitutional Court to perform the duties of the head of state for a transitional period.

Morsi's supporters who don't agree with the army's decision have been carrying out daily protests for the past six weeks demanding the return of the president's powers and restoration of the Constitution.

An Egyptian court also extended the decision to arrest Morsi for 15 days as part of an on-going investigation. The court accused Morsi of cooperation with Hamas, as well as the escape from prison during the revolution in 2011.
