Weddings in Turkey are increasing with the warming weather and the start of summer vacation for schools. This period, referred to as the "wedding season," brings activity to many sectors, from furniture to white goods, and from clothing to jewelry. The jewelry sector, which is the focus of attention, has also become one of the popular places for citizens before the wedding season.
DEMAND FOR WEDDING JEWELRY INCREASES DURING WEDDING SEASON
Jewelry store windows have been adorned with new and eye-catching models in preparation for the upcoming busy period. Especially with the increase in marriage proposals and engagement ceremonies, interest in solitaire rings and wedding bands has intensified. Additionally, jewelry sets consisting of bracelets, necklaces, and earrings prepared for the bride, as well as quarter, half, full gold, and gram gold preferred for investment purposes, are among the most sought-after products. The traditional attachment to gold and its perception as an investment vehicle keeps the demand for gold alive during wedding shopping. Jewelers also warn consumers shopping during this period to be cautious of "fake" products and to shop from reliable places.
"PURCHASES SHOULD BE MADE FROM RELIABLE JEWELERS"
Timucin Sönmez, President of the Ankara Jewelers and Watchmakers Chamber, stated that every wedding season is busy for jewelers. He noted that due to the increase in the global price of gold and developments within the country, they expect a slight decrease in sales compared to previous years. Nevertheless, he reported that essential needs for weddings are being met. Sönmez said, "Our citizens need to be even more careful against fake gold during this period. Shopping from reliable jewelers will be an important step to avoid grievances. Recently, we have also seen gold sales being conducted through e-commerce platforms. As a result of our work with the Ministry of Treasury and Finance and the Mint, we declared 2025 as the 'year of combating fake gold.'
ELECTRONIC TRACKING FOR GOLD
Sönmez emphasized that they are focusing on the fight against fake gold and jewelry products, stating that they will establish an electronic tracking system with watermarks and QR codes on all Mint products. He mentioned that they recommend a barcode system for online sales, saying, "As a chamber, we have initiated a study regarding the barcode system. Each seller will attach this barcode to the product they sell, which they will obtain from their local chambers. Thus, gold will become a secure product. Additionally, those without a jewelry trade authorization certificate cannot engage in this trade. We also have a project with the Ministry of Trade regarding this. We will organize a workshop in September to formalize these matters further."
"THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CHEAP GOLD"
Sönmez pointed out that jewelry purchases for weddings are made according to the model of the wedding dress, stating: "Brides choose jewelry that matches the style they have adopted for their dresses. This is not related to economic conditions; it is entirely about personal tastes and preferences. Despite price fluctuations, our brides will get what they want. I want to emphasize that shopping from reliable jewelers is important. There is no such thing as cheap gold."
