It was reported that 109 people lost their lives yesterday in Paris, the capital of France, due to the extreme heat.
EXTREME HEAT CLAIMED 109 LIVES
The hot weather that has been affecting France for days is also impacting citizens' health. According to a report by public broadcaster Franceinfo, which cited data from the emergency health service provider, 109 people in Paris were assessed to have died due to extreme heat yesterday.
30 PEOPLE SUFFERED HEART ATTACKS
This number only covers those who died at home or in public spaces, while deaths in nursing homes and hospitals were not included in this figure. On an average normal day during the same period of the year, 7 people lose their lives in Paris.
Yesterday, 30 people also suffered heart attacks in Paris, and a patient experiencing hyperthermia due to high temperatures had a recorded body temperature of 43.7 degrees Celsius.
55 PEOPLE DIED BY DROWNING
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari stated on the public broadcaster Franceinfo, where she was a guest, that 55 people have died from drowning across the country since the onset of the extreme heat. Ferrari urged citizens to be extremely careful while swimming.
AIR CONDITIONERS AND FANS ARE SELLING OUT
In France, where a red alert has been issued in 37 provinces, the ongoing extreme heat reaching record levels has increased demand for fans and air conditioners.
Stocks in stores are depleted, making it impossible to find cooling devices. In Chambray-les-Tours, Indre-et-Loire province, a crowd lining up to buy fans and air conditioners rushed into the store as it opened, competing with each other.
There were also scuffles for fans and air conditioners at stores in various shopping malls. Cooling devices sold out within seconds.
EMERGENCY DECLARED IN HOSPITALS
An "emergency plan" has been activated in hospitals in the Ile-de-France region, which includes the capital Paris. While authorities are concerned about those dying at home, some city residents have covered their windows with aluminum foil to protect themselves from the heat.
ALL PERSONNEL ON LEAVE TO BE CALLED IN
The "white plan" activated in healthcare institutions in France during extraordinary situations includes steps such as calling in personnel on leave, increasing bed capacity, and postponing non-urgent surgeries. Within the scope of this emergency plan, crisis units are also being activated within hospitals.
LIFE AT A STANDSTILL IN GERMANY AS WELL
Meanwhile, the heatwave is also intensifying its impact in Germany. The country is experiencing one of its hottest days in recent years. The German Meteorological Service (DWD) reported that air temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, especially in the western and southwestern parts of the country, reaching up to 42 degrees Celsius in some places.
