In the case regarding the collapse of Block G of the Ebrar Site, where 123 people lost their lives and 11 were injured in the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, in Kahramanmaraş, the building contractor Tevfik Tepebaşı was sentenced to 17 years and 4 months in prison, while two individuals who served in the project and construction control units at the Kahramanmaraş Municipality at the time were each sentenced to 6 years and 8 months in prison.

In the trial regarding the collapse of Ebrar Sitesi Block G, where 123 people died in the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, contractor Tevfik Tepebaşı was sentenced to 17 years and 4 months, and two municipal officials were each sentenced to 6 years and 8 months in prison.

VERDICT IN THE EBRAR SITESI CASE

The hearing held at the Kahramanmaraş 5th Heavy Penal Court was attended by the detained defendant Tevfik Tepebaşı and A.Ö., who is detained in another case, via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBIS) from the prison where they are held.

The non-custodial defendants E.I, A.B., and A.T.B., along with the complainants and party lawyers, were present at the hearing, while the other defendants did not attend. When asked for their final statements, defendant A.Ö. stated that he did not accept the allegations and requested his acquittal.

The detained defendant Tevfik Tepebaşı argued that the building was constructed by the cooperative and other engineers and contractors, and claimed he had no responsibility, requesting his acquittal. Other defendants also argued they had no connection to the building and requested acquittal.

While the complainant lawyers requested the punishment of the defendants, the defense lawyers stated that they did not accept the opinion on the merits.

CONTRACTOR SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS IN PRISON

After the statements, the court panel announced its decision, sentencing the detained defendant contractor Tevfik Tepebaşı to 17 years and 4 months in prison for the crime of "causing the death and injury of more than one person through conscious negligence."

TWO MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS ALSO RECEIVED PRISON SENTENCES

The panel sentenced H.M.G. and F.Y., who served in the project and construction control units of the Kahramanmaraş Municipality at the time, to 6 years and 8 months each in prison for the crime of "causing the death of more than one person through negligence."

The court also ruled for the acquittal of the non-custodial defendants T.K, M.K, E.I, Ç.K, A.Ö, A.T.B, A.P, F.D, H.Ç, O.Y.D., and Z.A.Ş.

Meanwhile, the court panel had previously decided to separate the files of the fugitive defendants Ahmet Doğan and Mustafa Timurbanga due to their inability to be apprehended in the previous session.

In the indictment prepared by the Kahramanmaraş Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a case was filed against 16 defendants, including 6 public officials, regarding the incident in which 123 people died and 11 people were injured as a result of the collapse of Ebrar Sitesi Block G located in the Şazibey neighborhood of Onikişubat district during the earthquake centered in Pazarcık with a magnitude of 7.7.
