With the warming weather in Adana, 3 people who entered irrigation canals and lakes to cool off drowned and lost their lives. It has been reported that an average of 25-30 people die each year in the city while trying to cool down.

As the weather gradually warms up in Adana, young people seeking to cool off have started entering the Seyhan River, irrigation canals, and Seyhan Dam Lake. As in previous years, fatalities while trying to cool down have emerged this year as well. Even though the heat has not fully set in, 3 young people have died by drowning in irrigation canals and the lake within a week.

HEAVY TOLL IN ADANA

Drowning incidents frequently occur in irrigation canals, ponds, and dams in Adana, especially during summer months. According to data, more than 250 people have died by drowning in the city in the last 10 years. This reveals that an average of 25 to 30 people lose their lives by drowning each year. Adana Police Department's Community Supported Policing Branch teams emphasize that irrigation canals are extremely dangerous due to strong currents and sudden depth changes, warning citizens to stay away from these areas. Despite this, young people continue to enter particularly irrigation canals.

Additionally, according to TÜİK data, this number was recorded as 572 nationwide in Turkey in 2023, while some data indicate that this figure has reached an annual average of 900 to 1,200 in recent years.
