The revelation that two of the four people killed in a suspicious car accident in northern Mexico on Sunday were CIA agents has stirred the country. While the U.S. press reported that the agents were returning from a secret operation, the Mexican President stated that he was unaware of the operation and announced that a diplomatic note had been sent to the U.S. He indicated that they will investigate whether the incident constitutes a national security violation.

It has been claimed that two Americans who died in a traffic accident that occurred on Sunday in Mexico's Chihuahua state were "undercover" Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents. According to a report by the American newspaper New York Times, two American and two Mexican officials lost their lives following a suspicious car accident while returning from an operation targeting illegal methamphetamine laboratories in a mountainous region.

DIPLOMATIC NOTE SENT TO THE US

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that a diplomatic note was sent to the United States regarding the loss of 2 US and 2 Mexican officials in an operation against criminal organizations in Chihuahua state.

Speaking at the daily press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum said it is being investigated whether the incident constitutes a violation of national sovereignty.

Sheinbaum stated, "This situation needs to be clarified. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a letter to the US Ambassador to provide all information. This is a matter of national security and sovereignty, so what happened is not a situation to be taken lightly."

INVESTIGATION INITIATED

Sheinbaum, conveying that federal authorities were not aware that two foreign agents participated in field operations, emphasized that no state government in Mexico can establish security cooperation with foreign authorities outside of federal channels.

Reminding that the activities of foreign country agents on national territory are regulated by the Constitution and the National Security Law, Sheinbaum noted, "It must be clear to both the US and state governments that cooperation must be conducted within the framework of agreements and laws."

In her statement on April 21, Sheinbaum had said that the operation in the northern state of Chihuahua, in which 2 US and 2 Mexican officials died, was not previously reported to the federal government and that it would be investigated whether this operation constituted a violation of the law.

In his statement on April 19, Chihuahua State Attorney General Cesar Jauregui Moreno announced that 2 Mexican local officials and 2 US embassy employees lost their lives when their truck rolled off a cliff while returning from a demolition operation targeting a facility determined to belong to criminal organizations.

CLAIM THAT THE 2 DECEASED AMERICANS WERE CIA PERSONNEL

According to a report by the New York Times (NYT), individuals with knowledge of the matter who wished to remain anonymous made statements regarding the deceased Americans.

Accordingly, officials alleged that the 2 deceased US citizens were personnel of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
