5 arrests in investigation into death of Dorukhan Büyükışık

The number of detentions in the investigation into the death of Dorukhan Büyükışık, who was found dead at a construction site in 2018 in İzmir's Narlıdere district, has risen to 23. Among the suspects, five people, including four construction guards and one excavator operator, were arrested. The remaining 18 suspects, whose judicial procedures are ongoing, have been referred to the duty Criminal Court of Peace with a request for arrest.

Dorukhan Büyükışık, son of retired Major General Ethem Büyükışık, was found dead on May 13, 2018, at a construction site near his home. The incident was recorded as 'suicide'; however, the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office reopened the case and filed a lawsuit against 8 police officers involved in the incident—Commissioner Atakan K. (44), Commissioner Deniz A. (36), Police Officer Duygu Ö. (35), Police Officer Fikret S., Police Officer Halil A. (55), Assistant Commissioner Hüseyin V. (49), Narlıdere Station Chief İsmail K. (59), and Police Officer Musa E. (55)—at the İzmir 21st Criminal Court of First Instance, seeking up to 1 year in prison for 'abuse of office.'

TWO FILES WERE MERGED

During the ongoing investigation, an indictment was prepared against security guards H.K (69), H.A. (77), T.Ç. (41), worker B.Ç. (47), and security guard A.G. (77) from a nearby area, seeking life imprisonment for 'intentional murder.' The indictment stated that the death likely occurred after the victim was struck in the back with a hard and effective object, and the body may have been moved to the specified location. The indictment was accepted by the İzmir 21st Heavy Penal Court. While both trials were ongoing, the cases were merged. The trial of 13 unarrested defendants continues at the İzmir 21st Heavy Penal Court.

DETENTION ORDER FOR 26 SUSPECTS

A new development occurred regarding Büyükışık's death. Under the coordination of the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a detention order was issued for 26 suspects. Teams from the İzmir Provincial Gendarmerie Command TEM Branch Directorate, assigned by the Terrorism and Organized Crimes Investigation Bureau, launched simultaneous operations across 9 provinces centered in İzmir. Among those subject to detention orders were construction company owners Mehmet Münir T., Mehmet Taylan T., former Narlıdere District Police Chief İsmail Y., former Narlıdere Station Chief İsmail K., Crime Scene Investigation Bureau Chief Atakan K., Group Chief Commissioner Hüseyin V., police officers, and workers.

23 SUSPECTS DETAINED

In operations across Istanbul, Kütahya, Aydın, Samsun, Bursa, Tunceli, Manisa, Karabük, and İzmir, 22 suspects were taken into custody. With the capture of one more person, the number of detainees rose to 23. Digital materials were seized during searches at the suspects' addresses. Efforts to capture 3 fugitive suspects believed to be abroad are ongoing.

GUARDS ARRESTED

After procedural statements at the İzmir Provincial Gendarmerie Command TEM Branch Directorate, Tayfun Çakmakçı, Hüseyin Kaya, Hulusu Aras, Ali Gülbaşı, who were identified as guards at the construction site where the incident occurred, and excavator operator Bilal Çelik were arrested on charges of 'intentional murder.' The remaining 18 suspects, whose court procedures are ongoing, have been referred to the duty Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for arrest.

STATEMENT FROM THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

In a statement by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the matter, it was stated: 'As a result of the operation carried out within the scope of the investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, 5 of the total 23 suspects detained were arrested by the court. The remaining 18 suspects in custody have been referred to the duty Criminal Judgeship of Peace by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office with a request for their arrest.'
