It was announced that 85 leaders will attend COP31, the UN Climate Change Conference that Türkiye will host for the first time. A special song titled “Let’s COP” was prepared for the summit. The video clip of the English song composed for the summit to be held in Antalya on November 9-20 featured Türkiye’s natural beauties. COP31 President and Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, who shared the clip, gave the message “One world, one call, Let’s COP.”

A special song has been composed for COP31, the global climate summit under the UN umbrella that Türkiye will host for the first time. The English-language song titled “Let's COP” will call the world to climate awareness and action. Sharing the video clip featuring Türkiye's natural beauties, COP31 President and Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum gave the message, “One world, one call, Let's COP.”

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change continues its preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the world's most important climate organization. Türkiye prepared a special song for the events to be held in Antalya between November 9 and 20. The English-language song's lyrics call for climate action, while footage from Türkiye's natural beauties in different locations was used.

FROM EVERY LAND TO EVERY SHORE, LET'S COP

The Turkish lyrics of the song are as follows:

Sun along the coast, Shine Antalya! / As voices rise, the whole world knows / Our hands are up, we are ready to take action / We are moving forward for a better future / Turn down the heat, bring it (the heat) down / One world, one call, Let's COP / From every land to every shore / Let's COP, we stand up for more / Turn down the heat, bring it (the heat) down / One world, one call, Let's COP / Türkiye is shining, no stopping / Come on COP, let's take it to the top / Oceans are breathing, forests are speaking / Shaping and protecting the future is in our hands / Step by step, we stand tall / Now together we answer this call / Turn down the heat, bring it (the heat) down / One world, one call, Let's COP / From every land to every shore / Let's COP, we stand up for more / Turn down the heat, bring it (the heat) down / One world, one call, Let's COP / Türkiye is shining, no stopping / Come on COP, let's take it to the top / One World, one chance, one opportunity / All together, Let's COP / One World, one chance, one opportunity / All together, Let's COP

TÜRKİYE WILL BE THE CENTER OF CLIMATE DIPLOMACY

Türkiye hosting COP31 is of great importance both for its international visibility and for it to attain a decisive position in climate diplomacy.

Conferences of the Parties (COP) are held every year with the participation of 197 countries. The sessions where countries' greenhouse gas reduction targets, adaptation policies, climate finance, loss and damage mechanisms, and carbon market rules are determined are of vital importance for a world struggling with the climate crisis.

The rules regarding the implementation of the Paris Agreement are also shaped at COP meetings. Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum will preside over the organization, which will be held in Türkiye for the first time this year, with the approval of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

85 LEADERS WILL ATTEND

Minister Kurum and Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi inspected the COP31 preparations on site. The ministers, who examined the construction works at the EXPO 2016 area, received information on transportation, security, health, and emergency preparations. Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, Acting Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality Büşra Özdemir, General Commander of the Gendarmerie General Ali Çardakcı, General Director of Police Ali Fidan, AK Party Antalya Provincial Chairman Ali Çetin, and senior executives of the ministries attended the meetings and the press statement.

Minister Kurum, stating that preparations have reached the final stage and that they are largely ready, said, “We are inspecting the conference area, transportation routes, security points, and health units one by one on site. I would also like to state that we have now reached the final stage and are largely ready. Our summit starts in this area on November 9 and will continue until November 20. We will hold the leaders' summit between November 11 and 12, and so far 85 leaders have confirmed their participation. Also, nearly 300 ministers, as stated by our friends from the United Nations, will visit our country within this scope.”

HIGHEST NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS IN COP HISTORY

Explaining that half of the approximately 1,100,000-square-meter area has been designated as the blue zone and half as the green zone, Kurum said, “We are in the area where we will host leaders and delegations separately and at the same time conduct climate negotiations. Meanwhile, we have approved the applications of 159 pavilions and 90 delegation offices, which is the highest number of applications in COP history. United Nations officials also shared this with us. We have made two general assembly halls, 28 meeting rooms, and 6 special event areas ready.”

MEDIA CENTER FOR 4,000 PRESS MEMBERS

Stating that the summit will be followed by national and international press, Kurum said, “We have established a media center that will serve 4,000 national and international media members like you, and within this scope, 3,000 media representatives have so far completed their accreditation. More than 300 press conferences will be held here, and from 40 live broadcast points, we will convey Türkiye's stance and climate leadership to the whole world, God willing.”

THE GREEN ZONE WILL BE OUR SHOWCASE OPEN TO THE WORLD

Saying that the green zone will include exhibitions, concerts, children's playgrounds, a children's island, and technology areas for young people, Kurum said, “The green zone will be our showcase open to the world. Again, we will convey Turkish gastronomy to our guests through our events, with our cuisine from seven regions such as Antalya, Gaziantep, and Konya, and our cultural values here. We will feel the Turkish people's tolerance and hospitality throughout the entire COP area. Therefore, these venues will be almost a projection of our country.”

THREE VILLAGES ARE BEING PREPARED FOR “ZERO WASTE”

Stating that zero waste practices will be included in all areas of the conference, Minister Murat Kurum said, “Our waste-free kitchen and zero waste museum are ready here. Again, the villages of Solak, Demirciler, and Ormana in Antalya will be zero waste villages in every sense. Here, under the coordination of our governor's office, we are preparing these villages for the organization. We expect more than 1 million visitors to our area during the conference.”

45 THOUSAND VOLUNTEERS FROM 154 COUNTRIES

Explaining that civil society organizations and local governments would also attend the conference, Kurum said, “A total of 45 thousand volunteers from 154 different countries, including 2 thousand civil society organizations, have applied to the conference. Our municipalities, both from our country and from other countries in the international arena, will also share their works in this field, the work they have done, and their experience in combating climate change in this regard. In other words, in this sense, we will carry out COP31 alongside all the institutions of our state, with the partnership of our volunteers and civil society organizations.”

630 ADDITIONAL VEHICLES FOR TRANSPORTATION

Noting that within the scope of transportation preparations, approximately 38 kilometers of road had been renewed and work exceeding 21 kilometers had been carried out on 4 main arteries, Kurum said, “Transportation will be provided via seven highway routes and the tram line. In other words, we will ensure the safe transportation of more than 1 million visitors to the area. Of course, in this sense, we are putting an additional 630 vehicles into service. With the support of both our metropolitan municipality and our municipalities from other provinces, we have brought these vehicles to Antalya. Within this scope, our participants will reach the main point by low-emission buses and from there pass to the area by electric vehicles and shuttle services.”

"WE BUILT PERMANENT STRUCTURES OVER 35 THOUSAND SQUARE METERS"

Emphasizing that the investments would continue to serve Antalya after the summit, Kurum said, “We did not build this 1 million square meter area only for a 12-day event to be held in our Antalya. In the blue zone alone, we built permanent structures over 35 thousand square meters. The structures immediately to our left are permanent structures. Likewise, the roads we renewed and the transportation connections we strengthened will continue to serve this city, our Antalya, after the summit.”

EXPECTATION OF 3-4 BILLION DOLLARS IN ADDED VALUE

Making assessments regarding the economic impact of the summit, Minister Kurum said, “According to our current work, COP31 will create approximately 2 billion dollars of direct economic activity in Antalya. Moreover, with the multiplier effect, we expect its total added value to reach 3-4 billion dollars. In this giant organization, our city's tradespeople and many of our sectors, from accommodation to transportation, from retail to construction and production, will gain commercial activity in this sense.”

"COP31'S REPORT CARD WILL NOT BE GIVEN ON THE EVENING OF NOVEMBER 20"

Stating that they aimed to turn commitments into implementation at the summit, Kurum continued as follows: “Although COP31 will officially take place on November 9-20, COP31's report card will not be given on the evening of November 20. I believe that this implementation COP, which we have designed and set out on the foundations of dialogue, consensus, and action from the first day, will leave a permanent mark on future climate policies. At the point the world has reached, in the second decade of the Paris Agreement, we now want to implement permanent practices. In this regard, we want to realize a COP31 that brings action and implementation to the forefront and where commitments are now put into practice.”

ÇİFTÇİ: WE COMPLETED THE NATO SUMMIT WITH 56 THOUSAND PERSONNEL

Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi, stating that they had come to Antalya to see the preparations on site and ensure coordination, said, “As you know, as a country, we held the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7-8 last July. As the Ministry of Interior, we took part with 56 thousand personnel to complete the summit without problems, and we held the NATO summit without any issues or accidents. God willing, we are planning the COP31 summit with the same attention and care. We are taking the necessary security and public order measures.”

MEASURES FOR 100 THOUSAND VISITORS PER DAY

Explaining that they made the security planning according to the expected participation, Çiftçi said, “A total of 26 thousand personnel from the police, gendarmerie, and coast guard will be on duty at the summit. We have made the necessary plans from land, air, and sea. Our aim is to complete this organization flawlessly as well.”

EVACUATION AND FIRE PLANNING FROM AFAD

Saying that the preparations were not limited to security measures, Minister of Interior Çiftçi said the following: “Our AFAD Presidency, with 15 vehicles, 120 personnel, and our search and rescue personnel, is carrying out the necessary work. In the area where the conference will be held and the areas where our guests will stay, they are also reviewing all preparations, from fire measures to evacuation plans, to emergency planning. Our Ministry of Health, with 110 ambulances, 300 health personnel, and 31 UMKE teams, has also made its health measures and planning here. Our aim is to realize the organization here in the best way, with the highest number of participants, to make our guests comfortable in our country, and to ensure that the conference takes place in a safe environment.”

ANTALYA GOVERNORSHIP AUTHORIZED FOR DEMONSTRATION APPLICATIONS

Stating that they also took into account that demonstrations could be held within the scope of the summit, Çiftçi said, “According to Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstration Marches, demonstrations to be held by foreigners in our country are subject to the permission of our Ministry of Interior. Considering that managing this from the center would be difficult, we have delegated our authority on this matter to our Antalya Governorship. Those who will apply here regarding meetings and demonstration marches, those who have planning related to this, will be able to apply to our Antalya Governorship through the system. Our Antalya Governorship will make these evaluations, designate places for them, take the necessary security measures, and we will thus ensure their healthy management.”
