Survivor Greece contestant Stavros Floros, after losing his leg in a boating accident, filed a $100 million lawsuit against parties including Acun Ilıcalı and production companies.
22-year-old Stavros Floros, competing in the 13th season of Survivor Greece, launched a legal battle after losing his left leg in a horrific accident during filming in the Dominican Republic. The young contestant, who was caught in the propeller of a tour boat while spearfishing in the open sea, filed a lawsuit exceeding $100 million against the production company AcunMedya and broadcaster SKAI TV on grounds of negligence.
CLAIMED NEGLIGENCE AND SECURITY FAILURES
In the lawsuit file submitted to the court on September 3, Floros accused the program producers of gross negligence. The contestant argued that the show's format mandated spearfishing in the open sea and that they were sent into waters with heavy tourist traffic near the Bayahibe region of the Dominican Republic without adequate safety measures. According to the allegations, there were no safety boats, lookouts, protected areas, or warning signs in the area at the time of the accident. Floros also maintained that accidents had occurred in these same waters before, with one fatality on record.
SEVERED LEG NEVER FOUND
The young contestant, whose left leg was severed by the propeller impact in the accident last May, stated that his severed limb was never recovered from the water. Floros, who said he owes his life to a tourniquet applied by a foreign passenger on the boat that hit him to stop the bleeding, was immediately transported to a hospital in Miami after the accident. The contestant, treated in the hospital for two months, underwent numerous difficult surgeries to repair his severely injured right leg in addition to the amputation of his left leg. The compensation amount sought, citing past and future physical pain, psychological trauma, and loss of quality of life, exceeded $100 million.
ACUNMEDYA: ACCIDENT OCCURRED OUTSIDE THE COMPETITION PROCESS
AcunMedya, one of the parties to the lawsuit, announced that the accident occurred during a break in filming while the contestant was spearfishing entirely outside the competition process within the reality show. The company stated that from the very first moment, the injured contestant was given assistance and safely transported to the hospital, and that port authorities are conducting an investigation to determine all the circumstances of the accident.
The broadcaster SKAI TV, on the other hand, suspended the broadcast of Survivor Greece following the tragic event. Emphasizing that the entire production process was carried out under the complete control and responsibility of AcunMedya, the television channel reported that they are closely monitoring the contestant's health condition and will provide every possible contribution to treatment and rehabilitation services.
