A 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Japan's Kyushu region. A 1-meter tsunami warning has been issued, and coastal prefectures are on alert.
The Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu Island, located in southwestern Japan, was shaken by a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1. Following the tremor, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency for the prefectures in the region and issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas.
TSUNAMI EXPECTED UP TO 1 METER
According to preliminary assessments by the Japan Meteorological Agency, an alert status was immediately activated after the severe earthquake measuring 7.1 in magnitude.
Japanese public broadcaster NHK announced that possible waves hitting coastal regions are expected to reach about 1 meter in height. Officials warned citizens living in coastal areas against the risk to life safety: to immediately move away from shorelines, urgently evacuate to high and safe zones, and remain vigilant against aftershocks.
STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN THE REGION
An emergency earthquake warning was issued for a wide area encompassing Kyushu Island, the epicenter of the earthquake, and its surroundings. The prefectures where the Japanese government has shifted to alert status were declared as Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki.
While the local population was warned against possible aftershocks, no clear statement has yet been made by official authorities regarding whether the earthquake caused any loss of life or structural damage in the area. Search, survey, and damage assessment efforts are ongoing.
