75-year-old Englishman John Middleton, who lived in Mombasa, Kenya, was found stabbed in the bathroom of his home. Middleton's death occurred a few days after he reported that his dogs had been attempted to be poisoned. The incident came to light when Middleton failed to show up for his golf appointment on Saturday morning. Club captain Dinesh Sasan stated in an interview with the BBC that Middleton had mentioned in recent days that his dogs had been subjected to poisoning attempts. Local authorities reported that there were signs of a slight struggle in the house, but the crime scene was not heavily disturbed. The machete used in the attack was found at the scene, and it was noted that nothing had been stolen from the house. Middleton's friends described him as "a wonderful man." Sasan, who had known him since 2015, said, "He was very kind, principled, and helpful. I was completely shocked." His stepson Kelvin Gitau shared an emotional message on social media, stating, "John was a vibrant character who will be missed by his family and friends, and by everyone who knew him." Middleton's death marks the second tragedy following the murder of his wife Regina during a robbery six years ago. The retired engineer had moved to Kenya in 2014. The Norfolk Football Federation expressed its sadness over Middleton's death and described him as "a dedicated and beloved match official." While the British High Commission intervened in the case, it was reported that an autopsy would be conducted. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office stated that they were supporting the family and were in contact with local authorities.
