The Brazilian police announced that they prevented a bomb attack targeting Lady Gaga's concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police stated that the suspects aimed to carry out attacks using homemade explosives and gain fame on social media.

2 PEOPLE ARRESTED

According to a statement made by the police on X, the person responsible for the plan and a minor were arrested. More than two million people gathered for the concert, which was free of charge. The police said that the group planning the attack spread hate speech, particularly against children, youth, and the LGBTQ+ community.

The person alleged to be the planner of the attack was arrested for possessing illegal firearms in Rio Grande do Sul in the south of the country, while the other person was detained in Rio for possessing child abuse images.

SEARCH WARRANTS IN 4 STATES

According to the police, these individuals were promoting self-harm and radicalization among youth as a "form of challenge among young people." The Ministry of Justice stated that the suspects identified themselves as fans of Lady Gaga known as "Little Monsters." The police issued search warrants in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, and Sao Paulo, and electronic devices and other materials were seized.

The "Fake Monster Operation" was launched following a tip-off about online groups promoting violence among youth using coded language.

5,000 POLICE DEPLOYED

The concert, funded by the municipality to revitalize Rio's economy, was estimated to contribute $100 million to the economy. A total of 5,000 police officers were deployed to ensure the safety of the concert.

Drones and facial recognition cameras were also used to monitor the event as participants passed through metal detectors.

Lady Gaga, who last performed in Brazil in 2012, held the concert as part of the promotional tour for her eighth album, Mayhem.

The singer wore Brazil-themed costumes and outfits inspired by the national football team.
