The flood disaster in Nepal's Rasuwa district on the border with China caused great destruction, and images from the region drew attention. Some citizens were seen moving through the raging floodwaters and mud, searching for valuables or usable items carried away by the water. The fact that those searching for items among the water and debris continued their work with smiles from time to time was also reflected in the images.
The flood disaster that occurred in Nepal's Rasuwa district on the border with China has left behind great destruction. As the Bhotekoshi River overflowed, homes, roads, bridges, and infrastructure facilities were submerged, and hundreds of people are unaccounted for. Images coming from the region after the disaster revealed striking moments amidst the devastation.
THEY SEARCHED FOR ITEMS IN THE FLOODWATERS
In the images taken in the disaster zone, some citizens were seen searching for items swept away while wading through mud and floodwaters.
Moments when people, moving through the debris and various materials carried by the flood, carried items they pulled out of the water to the shore were captured on camera. Despite the severity of the disaster, some individuals smiling during the search stood out in the footage.
Citizens were seen trying to salvage materials that were swept away by the floodwaters and were still usable. The resulting images revealed the difficult conditions the local people faced after the disaster.
HUNDREDS MISSING
According to data announced by the Nepal Tourism Board, 403 people are still missing. Of these, 341 are foreigners and 62 are Nepali citizens. Among the missing are 133 Indians, 47 Americans, 34 Australians, and 33 British nationals.
However, figures regarding the loss of life are changing rapidly as search and rescue operations progress. While the death toll rose from 22 to 95 in different updates announced during the day in Nepal, AP reported in its latest update that 95 people had lost their lives in Nepal.
CAUSED GREAT DESTRUCTION
The disaster caused great destruction along the Bhotekoshi River in the Rasuwa district. While the floodwaters affected numerous settlements, roads, and bridges, serious damage also occurred at some hydroelectric facilities.
According to initial assessments, it is stated that the disaster may have occurred as a result of an ice and rock avalanche on the Tibetan side affecting the river and causing a sudden rise in water levels. Reuters reported that the ice-rock avalanche following the 4.4 magnitude earthquake may have triggered the flood.
SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS CONTINUE
The Nepali army, police, and other teams are continuing search and rescue operations in the region. Damage to roads, bridges, and communication infrastructure is making it difficult for teams to reach some areas. Authorities are also warning those living along the riverbanks about the possibility of new flooding.
The full extent of the disaster is expected to become clearer as unreachable areas are accessed and search operations are completed.
