30-year-old substitute teacher Carissa Jane Smith, who served in the state of Missouri, was arrested on charges of sexual abuse against her students. The chain of events at the Dixon School District began when the teacher gave her students her Snapchat account. According to police records, Smith first sent her students lewd photos and then engaged in sexual relations with them. The abuse incidents occurred both at the teacher's home and in various locations. It was determined that Smith gave each of the students $100 to keep quiet and also provided alcohol and drugs. So far, two students have been identified as victims. Despite some students' objections, Smith continued to engage in sexual relations and later gave them extra money to remain silent. The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office stated that the investigation is ongoing and that more victims may come to light. Smith, who started working at Dixon Middle School in 2022, later worked at the high school. She resigned from her position at the end of August after starting in July. Smith was arrested on Tuesday and faces a total of 19 charges. These charges include sexual intercourse with a minor (8 counts), sodomy, sexual contact with a student (3 counts), sexual abuse of a student (2 counts), child trafficking (2 counts), obstruction of justice (2 counts), and promoting prostitution. The management of the Dixon School District described the incident as "extremely disturbing and sad." Smith, who is currently being held in jail on a $250,000 bond, has not yet provided an official defense. If found guilty, she is expected to face many years in prison.
