In Spain's Catalonia region, police caught a 28-year-old Turkish fugitive in Barcelona who has a 26-year prison sentence in Turkey. The convict, who did not return to prison after being released on leave, is expected to have extradition proceedings initiated following Turkey's request.

The local police of Catalonia, an autonomous region in eastern Spain, Los Mossos d'Esquadra, announced that a Turkish fugitive who escaped from prison was captured in the city of Barcelona.

SENTENCED TO 26 YEARS FOR VARIOUS CRIMES, ESCAPED FROM PRISON WHILE ON PERMITTED LEAVE

In a statement from Los Mossos d'Esquadra, it was reported that a 28-year-old Turkish fugitive, who was sentenced to 26 years for crimes such as attempted murder of two people in Istanbul in 2016 and 2018, robbery, threats, and illegal possession of weapons, was captured on August 26 in a rented tourist house in Barcelona.

The information provided noted that the individual had been serving a 26-year prison sentence in a prison in Turkey since 2018, escaped last June by taking advantage of court-approved leave to visit a relative, and that an international arrest warrant had been issued for him by Turkish authorities.

In the statement, it was indicated that the fugitive's location was determined at the beginning of August in cooperation with the Turkish police, and he was tracked at different points along the Costa Brava coastline. It was shared that the individual, who was traveling with two people providing him logistical support, was captured within the scope of an investigation conducted by the International Fugitive Investigation Group (GRIF) teams.

EXPECTED TO BE EXTRADITED TO TURKEY

In the statement, it was stated that the two individuals who helped the sought-after convict used their own identities during the accommodation and that the fugitive concealed his identity information.

The fugitive, who was brought before the duty court in Barcelona, is expected to be extradited to Turkey.
