A gang member who put a baby to sleep with narcotic drugs made a shocking confession.

The trial of the administrators and members of the Newborn Gang, who provided unfair profits by transferring babies to hospitals they had agreements with and caused their deaths through negligent behavior, has begun in Istanbul.

In the indictment prepared regarding the 'Newborn Gang', one of the gang members, Hasan Basri Gök, stated that another gang member, Hakan Doğukan Taşçı, had sedated a baby with heavy narcotic drugs. Gök used the following statements:

"A baby came to the hospital. When it arrived, its condition was not bad, but on the 2nd or 3rd day of hospitalization, its condition began to deteriorate, and it started to experience heart anomaly issues. Fırat Sarı transferred the baby to the First International Hospital, where no treatment could be performed regarding heart surgery due to unfavorable conditions, so no surgical procedure could be applied to the baby in the hospital. The person responsible for the baby in the hospital was Hakan Doğukan Taşçı. In fact, Doğukan, who spoke with the baby's family, introduced himself as a doctor and intervened with the baby in the capacity of a doctor. The only medication that could be applied to the baby was a heart medication. Hakan Doğukan was administering this medication. At one point, he stopped the medication. He sedated the baby with heavy narcotic drugs. Later, despite intervention, the baby began to turn blue day by day due to the heart anomaly, but Hakan Doğukan Taşçı kept the baby for approximately 1.5 months with the medications he provided."

Detained defendant Hakan Doğukan Taşçı stated in today's hearing, "I do not accept the charges against me." Taşçı continued his statement in court:

"I DO NOT ACCEPT THE CHARGES"

Defendant Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: After I was arrested, I accepted some of the actions I took at the police station. However, I do not accept the charges of intentional murder. The claim that I requested medication without a doctor's order is not true, and I do not accept the tapes. I am a graduate of a health vocational high school and have been working in the neonatal unit for 10 years. I do not accept the charges against me.

Presiding Judge: Which of the other defendants do you know?

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: Since I work in the health sector, I know almost all of them. I know Fırat Sarı from Reyap Hospital. There are numerous charges against me. This is not just related to these hospitals. I have seen this in all the hospitals I have worked in for 10 years; these institutions do this to earn more money. But in these institutions, which are inspected every year, nurses are blamed in places where no faults are found. We do not profit from the epicrisis report. In 70% of hospitals, there are no doctors in the neonatal unit. We intervene there without a doctor.

Presiding Judge: You are talking to Fırat Sarı on the tape; what are you discussing?

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: Every hospital owner wants to make money, wants to make more money. The hospital owner pressures Fırat Sarı, and he tells me.

Presiding Judge: Explain your conversation with Mert Özdemir.

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: The patient was in bad condition, and I spoke with the patient's relative. Because the baby was in bad condition, I told Mert at the hotel, "Don't say anything bad to the families."

Presiding Judge: What is the money issue you discussed with the patient's relative?

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: Hasan Basri called, saying, "We will receive payment from the family; we will handle it." I said, "No registration should be opened without payment." That's all; I did not take a single penny from the family.

Presiding Judge: Who received it?

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: Fırat Sarı received it. 30 thousand lira. 20 thousand lira went to the hospital, and 10 thousand lira was taken as a commission. I had no money transactions.

Presiding Judge: You said, "If it dies, there will be trouble; what will happen to the 112 transfer?"

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: The patient was Turkmen; the doctor said the baby had a heart condition. If surgery was not performed, the baby would die. That's why I explained that it needed to be transferred.

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: The doctor decides whether the patient will be hospitalized and for how long.

Presiding Judge: Hasan Basri is calling you. He is talking about inspections. If they find that file, there will be trouble. You have a statement saying you arranged everything. What is this?

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: A simultaneous inspection came, and the inspection was over. I was chatting with my friend about the inspection. There were templates for deceased children, and I changed some information in that draft table. That was the extent of my verbal conversation after the inspection. Since there was no doctor, the inspectors called me and spoke with me. That's the situation.

Presiding Judge: We determined the step list as we pleased.

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: It was not a step list; it was like this; there was a template, the patient template was bad, we were writing patients. Are these contrary to reality? Yes, they are contrary to reality, but we were not transferring them to the SGK system. There is no such thing as step determination. Talking like that is also in the past.

Presiding Judge: What do you say about the medications you sold?

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: The medications for the babies covered by SGK were being taken in excess. The excess was being destroyed. SGK pays 9,500 lira for this medication, but it was purchased for 7,000 lira when bought in bulk. Therefore, the more it is prescribed, the less SGK pays. We also heard rumors that the medications were being sold outside. I spoke with Fırat Sarı, and he also gave us approval. Hasan Basri was collecting the medications, and we were selling them to a person named Hüseyin Gündüz. He was an ambulance driver and did not know where we got the medications. Fırat Sarı took the money for the medications twice, and once Hasan and I took it. I had no situation of defrauding SGK.

Presiding Judge: I have 14 patients. You talked about whether we should wait for a few patients.

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: I am not the one waiting. I am saying this because I am the unit responsible.

Presiding Judge: What do you mean by saying they know me as a doctor? Did you introduce yourself as a doctor?

Hakan Doğukan Taşçı: When a patient came to the intensive care unit, I provided information to the family without being a doctor. The family addressed me as a doctor. I did not say I am not a doctor.

Presiding Judge: That child was going to die 20 days ago; explain the diagnosis.

Hakan Taşçı: The patient was Turkmen. There was 500 thousand lira for the surgery. The family did not accept the surgery because we do not have money. He would have lived for a week, but by chance, he lived more than a week. The medications the patient used and the hospital management said, "This child will die anyway; what is the need for so much medication?" However, he lived for 44 days.

Presiding Judge: Why would I kill the child? You have a statement saying, "Don't put it in your head that I would kill him."

Hakan Taşçı: Why are you still dealing with the baby? I intervened for him to live.

Presiding Judge: You said you didn't give the corpse; they will blow us up, why?

Hakan Taşçı: The child's grandmother called, saying, "They did not give the baby's body." They said there was a payment inside, and they would not give the body until it was paid. I was shocked; I spoke with the hospital management and helped them.

I was called around 00:00. Batuhan Çetin called me from Güney Hospital. He said they had a baby weighing 509 grams, and the baby's condition was bad. He stated that the doctor said, "Pull the plug and let it go."

Presiding Judge: Who was the doctor?

Defendant: I remember it was Dr. Rıza. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he only has his wife's diploma.

Presiding Judge: Do you know him?

Defendant: No.

Defendant: He called me via video, and I said I would check on the patient. I mentioned things I could help with over the phone. I recorded the video and gave it to the prosecutor. However, that child died. Since the family was unaware of the situation, they had them write a thank-you letter to the family.

47 DEFENDANTS APPEARED BEFORE THE JUDGE

A total of 47 defendants, 22 of whom are in custody, appeared before the judge as part of the indictment accepted by the Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court. In the hearing held in the conference hall, a total of 41 defendants, including 22 in custody, were present. Additionally, Ümit Özdağ, the General President of the Victory Party, and the presidents of the Turkish Bar Association, Istanbul Bar Association, Istanbul No. 2 Bar Association, Muğla Bar Association, Tekirdağ Bar Association, Diyarbakır Bar Association, Bursa Bar Association, Denizli Bar Association, Mardin Bar Association, and Kırklareli Bar Association also attended the hearing.

During the identification process, the organization leader Fırat Sarı, who took the stand, stated that his monthly income was 400,000 TL. It was also noted that there were other citizens who stated they were victims and submitted petitions during the hearing. It was learned that the new petitions would be evaluated by the prosecutor's office.
