The family of Mehmet Ekin, who passed away on June 23 in Batman, experienced a shock when they wanted to visit their father's grave. It was revealed that Ekin's grave had been moved to another location without informing the family. Following the scandal, the municipality issued a statement indicating that the responsible personnel had been suspended from their duties.
The 23rd of June, Mehmet Ekin, who passed away in the city, was buried by his family at the Asri Cemetery. However, during a cemetery visit on July 4th, the family noticed that the body was not at the grave where it was buried and that it had been moved without permission to another grave nearby.
THEY MOVED THE GRAVE WITHOUT INFORMING THE FAMILY
According to the allegation, it was learned that the grave where Ekin was buried had previously been sold to another person, and after this person noticed the situation and objected, the officials removed the body from the grave at night and transferred it to another grave without informing the family or the prosecutor's office. After the incident came to light, the Ekin family, who experienced great sadness, went to the police to file a complaint against those responsible.
THE FAMILY STARTED TO KEEP VIGIL AT THE GRAVE
The family began to keep vigil at the cemetery to prevent a similar transfer from happening again until the process is concluded. Municipal officials stated that an administrative investigation has been initiated regarding the incident, and a judicial investigation is also ongoing.
A STATEMENT FROM THE MUNICIPALITY
A statement was made by the municipality regarding the issue. It was stated that the Cemetery Director has been suspended from duty and that the employment contracts of the workers identified as being involved in the incident have been terminated, with the following expressions included: "It has become necessary to make a public statement regarding the news shared by some media outlets about the 'Change of Burial Place' at Batman Municipality Asri Cemetery. Relatives of our deceased citizen M.E. stated that during their cemetery visit on July 4, 2025, M.E.'s body was transferred to a different grave than the one where he was buried.
"THE DIRECTOR HAS BEEN SUSPENDED"
In response, the relatives of the deceased M.E. expressed their intention to file a complaint with the Batman Municipality regarding the matter and to report the issue to the prosecutor's office. As a result of the complaint, a comprehensive investigation has been initiated by our Municipality to clarify the matter. Necessary administrative actions will be taken against all personnel responsible for the issue; the Cemetery Director's duties have been terminated for the sake of the investigation's integrity, and he has also been suspended from duty. On the other hand, the employment contracts of the employees of Personnel A.Ş. identified as being involved in the incident have also been terminated. The administrative investigation regarding the matter is being conducted meticulously, and a criminal complaint has been filed with the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office by our Municipality," it was stated.
