New York City in the US narrowly escaped a disaster that rivaled movie scenes. Police responding to a domestic violence report in Queens were thrown into the air by a massive explosion while at the scene.
SUSPECT WITH KNIFE AND CANISTERS STORMS ESTRANGED WIFE'S HOME
The incident occurred around 3:00 AM on Thursday. The 50-year-old suspect, Anroop Parasram, drunk and armed with a knife, raided the home of his estranged wife, who had previously obtained three restraining orders against him. The suspect entered the house with canisters of unknown contents; his wife, daughter, and grandchildren fled to the street and took refuge with police. Officers at the scene noticed a strong gas odor coming from the building.
THROWN INTO THE AIR AS THEY OPENED THE DOOR
After obtaining the basement key from the suspect's wife, police officers attempted to enter, at which point the building exploded with a loud noise. Authorities believe suspect Parasram intentionally triggered the explosion by setting himself on fire in the basement.
The force of the blast threw eight police officers into the air, and the terrifying moments were captured on body cameras. The footage shows officers being hurled meters away by the explosion and crashing into fences.
NO FATALITIES EXCEPT THE ATTACKER
The fire that followed the explosion was brought under control with the intervention of approximately 300 firefighters and emergency medical personnel. All 11 residents of the building had been evacuated before the incident, preventing further loss of life. It was reported that the condition of the eight injured police officers and four civilians was stable, and the only body found in the rubble was identified as that of suspect Parasram.
