At the United Nations General Assembly, a draft resolution providing for the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba was adopted with the support of 130 countries, including Turkey. Following the vote, in which 17 countries, including the United States and Israel, opposed, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel described the result as "a victory for the Cuban people" and sharply reacted to the US administration.

The United Nations General Assembly voted on a draft resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo that the US has imposed on Cuba for many years.

The draft was adopted with the support of 130 countries despite the opposing votes of 17 countries. Turkey was among the countries that voted in favor of lifting the embargo.

The US, Israel, Ukraine, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates were among the countries that opposed the draft.

CUBAN LEADER’S HARSH WORDS FOR THE US

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, in a statement on his X account after the vote, described the result at the UN as his country’s success.

Diaz-Canel argued that the US pressured other countries to change the outcome of the vote, and stated that the international community took a stance against the embargo despite these attempts.

Diaz-Canel said, “The world, rising above even the crudest pressure and blackmail applied by the US to change the course of this vote, has once again taken a stand against the blockade by an overwhelming majority.”

“THIS IS THE VICTORY OF THE CUBAN PEOPLE”

Diaz-Canel, who described the decision adopted at the UN General Assembly as a historic success, continued his statement as follows:

“This victory that Cuba achieved today at the UN General Assembly is the victory of the heroic Cuban people, who did not surrender to the US government’s policies of economic strangulation, its threats and abuses. It is the victory of truth over those who rely on lies and blackmail to collectively punish and subjugate an entire nation.”

“CUBA IS NOT A THREAT, THE BLOCKADE IS THE THREAT”

Criticizing the US administration’s policy toward Cuba, Diaz-Canel concluded his statement with the words, “Cuba is not a threat, the blockade is the threat.”

The Cuban government argues that the economic sanctions imposed by the US hinder the country’s development and negatively affect the living conditions of the people.

THE RESOLUTION DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY LIFT THE EMBARGO

The resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly amounts to a call on the US to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.

However, since General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding on this matter, the outcome of the vote does not automatically lift US sanctions.

Nevertheless, the fact that 130 countries voted in favor of ending the embargo represents significant diplomatic support for the Cuban government.
