FED LEAVES INTEREST RATE UNCHANGED

The US central bank announced its interest rate decision. In line with market expectations, the Fed left rates unchanged in the 3.75-4 percent range.

In its statement, the Fed said the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) approved the decision by a 10-2 vote to support the central bank's dual mandate of maximum employment and price stability.

Policymakers Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack dissented at the meeting, preferring a 25 basis point increase in the target range for the federal funds rate.

"INFLATION CONTINUES TO RUN HIGH"

The Committee used the phrase, "Inflation continues to run high," and committed to "ensuring price stability."

The statement also said, "The accumulation of further information will help determine the appropriate policy stance to ensure that inflation returns in a timely manner to the Committee's 2 percent objective."

The central bank noted that, despite elevated uncertainty partly linked to geopolitical developments, US economic activity has continued to grow at a strong pace, supported by resilient domestic spending, strong productivity growth, and solid capital investment.

Noting that job gains have kept pace with the labor force and that the unemployment rate has changed little, the Fed added that it continues its policy of maintaining ample reserves in the banking system.
