The French Blood Supply Agency announced that a French woman from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe is the only known carrier of a new blood group called "Gwada negative."
The French organization stated on Friday that researchers had taken a blood sample from the patient, who had undergone routine pre-operative tests, exactly 15 years ago, and that the discovery was made years later.
"WE HAVE DISCOVERED THE 48TH BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM IN THE WORLD"
The agency stated in a post on the social media site LinkedIn, "We have discovered the 48th blood group system in the world!" and added: "This discovery was officially recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) in early June in Milan." This scientific association had previously recognized 47 blood group systems.
"SHE IS THE ONLY PERSON COMPATIBLE WITH HER"
Thierry Peyrard from the discovery team noted that an unknown antibody was found in the 54-year-old patient living in Paris at the time during routine pre-operative tests, adding: "This woman is undoubtedly the only known case in the world. She is the only person compatible with herself."
