Diesel vehicle owners may face a new tax burden. The European Union is discussing a "Climate Tax" on diesel vehicles to accelerate the transition to green energy and reduce the use of diesel vehicles that have high carbon emissions.

Efforts against carbon emissions and environmental pollution in Europe may reflect as taxes in the automotive sector. The European Union administration has started working on a new tax called "Climate Tax" aimed at reducing the damage caused by diesel engines to the environment.

JUSTIFICATION FOR THE CLIMATE TAX

Diesel engines create a greater environmental burden in terms of harmful emissions such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides compared to gasoline or alternative fuel engines. According to a report by Karar, therefore, it is planned to impose an additional tax on diesel vehicles in Europe as part of efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change.

WILL THE NEW TAX BE APPLIED IN TURKEY AS WELL?

Currently, this tax is only on the agenda in some European Union countries and does not directly affect diesel vehicle owners in Turkey. However, global environmental standards and practices in Europe may gradually influence Turkey's automotive and taxation policies. Therefore, there is a possibility that a similar tax may be implemented in Turkey in the future. Even if this new tax application in Europe does not occur in Turkey, it may lead to a depreciation of diesel vehicles in the second-hand market. The possibility of a similar tax being applied in Turkey in the future may direct diesel vehicle owners towards alternative fuel vehicles.
