At least 29 people lost their lives as a bus traveling from the capital Lima to the city of Ayacucho in Peru rolled off a cliff of more than 200 meters. The Ministry of Interior reported that search and rescue operations are ongoing and 13 people were injured. The cause of the accident is still unknown. Peru's mountainous roads have witnessed numerous fatal accidents in the past few years. Similar bus accidents occurred in April 2021 and February 2022, resulting in the loss of many lives.
Officials have reported that at least 29 people have died in Peru after a bus rolled off a cliff of over 200 meters while traveling from the capital Lima to the southern city of Ayacucho.
The Ministry of Interior of the country announced on X platform that search and rescue operations are ongoing and that 13 people have been injured.
Authorities stated that the incident occurred around 05:00 local time and the cause is unknown.
All the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Peru's mountainous roads have witnessed several fatal accidents in the past few years.
In April 2021, a bus accident in the Áncash region, approximately 450 kilometers away from Lima, resulted in the death of 20 people and injury of 14 people.
In February 2022, a bus in the Pataz province in northern Peru veered off the road and fell off a 100-meter cliff, resulting in the death of 20 people and injury of 33 people.
