The button has been pressed for a giant organization that could change the balance in world football. It has been reported that UEFA and CONCACAF have begun talks for a joint Nations League involving a total of 96 national teams from Europe and the North and Central America-Caribbean region. If the project comes to fruition, European giants and countries such as the USA, Mexico, and Canada could regularly face each other in official matches.
According to The Guardian, the project, which is still in its early stages, is being considered for implementation after the 2028 European Championship. It is planned that a total of 96 countries, including UEFA's 55 and CONCACAF's 41 members, will compete in the tournament.
THEY COULD BE PLACED IN THE SAME GROUPS AS EUROPEAN GIANTS
The organization is envisaged to be played with a league system consisting of different levels. In the top level, League A, European giants such as Spain, France, England, and Germany could be drawn into the same groups as leading CONCACAF countries like the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Following the league phase, the champion will be determined through qualifying matches and a final tournament featuring four teams.
FIFA'S APPROVAL IS UNCERTAIN
Since the new organization is planned to be played within the current international match calendar, it has not yet been clarified whether additional approval from FIFA is required. There are also plans for the project to grow further in the coming years. According to the report, the Asian Football Confederation is also showing interest in the idea of a global Nations League.
