In the capital of the Central African Republic, Bangui, 29 students lost their lives and many others were injured in a stampede following a transformer explosion at Barthelemy Boganda High School.
TRANSFORMER EXPLODED AT SCHOOL
According to reports in the national press, panic ensued at the school following the explosion of the electrical transformer. It was reported that approximately 5,300 students preparing for the university entrance exam were in the building at the time of the incident, and the stampede resulting from the panic led to casualties.
29 STUDENTS LOST THEIR LIVES, 260 INJURED
Authorities announced that at least 29 students had lost their lives, and 260 others were injured, some of them seriously.
It was reported that the injured were transferred to nearby hospitals, an investigation into the incident was initiated, and the negligence of the relevant institutions would be examined. Detailed investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
3-DAY MOURNING DECLARED
President Faustin Archange Touadera declared a 3-day national mourning following the incident.
In the decree read on state radio, it was announced that flags would be flown at half-mast and memorial programs would be organized for the deceased students.
