The Ministry of Interior's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has shared a preliminary assessment report regarding the recent earthquakes in the Aegean Sea with the public. The report indicates that there is a possibility that the seismic activity could lead to volcanic movement.

The Ministry of Interior's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced in its assessment regarding the recent series of earthquakes in the Aegean Sea that there is a possibility that seismic activity could lead to volcanic activity.

AFAD shared its evaluation report regarding the recent earthquakes in the Aegean Sea with the public.

"IT MAY LEAD TO VOLCANIC ACTIVITY"

The report stated, "In the event of possible volcanic activity in the region, the effects of fine volcanic ash material released from the volcano being carried by the wind, pyroclastic flows that may develop depending on the height of the explosion column and its collapse, and hazards such as tsunamis that may occur after an explosion or earthquake could reach our country," drawing attention to the risk of volcanic activity.

The report also noted, "There is a possibility that the ongoing seismic activity may lead to volcanic activity," and added, "However, a similar intensity of seismic activity was experienced in the same region for 14 months in 2011-2012, but it did not lead to any volcanic activity."

"BEING MONITORED CAREFULLY"

The report further stated, "The activity occurring in the Aegean Sea is being monitored carefully in terms of earthquake, volcanism, and tsunami hazards."

EARTHQUAKE STORM IN THE AEGEAN

According to the data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), more than 750 earthquakes have been recorded in the Aegean Sea since January 26.

As a result of this activity, which developed as an earthquake storm, there were 1 earthquake with a magnitude less than 1, 109 earthquakes between 1-2, 293 earthquakes between 2-3, 294 earthquakes between 3-4, and 57 earthquakes between 4-5. The largest earthquake was recorded today as a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. The earthquakes particularly caused panic in Greece.
