After the appointment of a trustee to the Istanbul Provincial Administration, the CHP applied to the Çankaya District Election Board for an extraordinary congress following the signatures of over 900 delegates. The congress will be held on September 21.
The Republican People's Party (CHP), which was appointed as a trustee to the Istanbul Provincial Administration, applied to the Çankaya District Election Board for an extraordinary congress to be held.
After the trustee decision taken against the Istanbul Provincial Administration, the CHP decided to take a critical step.
CHP'S DECISION FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY CONGRESS
Upon the signatures of over 900 delegates, the CHP applied to the Çankaya District Election Board for an extraordinary congress. The congress will be held on September 21.
FIRST STATEMENT FROM CHP
The first statement from the CHP after the decision for an extraordinary congress came from Deputy Chairman Gül Çiftçi. Çiftçi stated, "Despite the siege against our party, we will hold our extraordinary congress on September 21, 2025, with the signatures of our delegates," and added, "The Republican People's Party has defended the will of the people against all kinds of pressure, obstruction, and intervention throughout its 102-year rooted history; it has never compromised on democracy, the rule of law, and freedoms."
"WILL REVEAL THE BELIEF IN DEMOCRATIC POLITICS"
Çiftçi also stated, "This extraordinary congress will not only determine the future of our party but will also reaffirm the belief in pluralism, diversity, and democratic politics in Turkey. This decision, taken with the will of our delegates, is the strongest evidence that the Republican People's Party stands tall against all intervention attempts by the government."
TRUSTEE APPOINTED TO ISTANBUL PROVINCIAL ADMINISTRATION
The Istanbul 45th Civil Court of First Instance, with a provisional ruling in the case filed for the annulment of the Istanbul Provincial Congress held on October 8, 2023, dismissed the provincial administration led by Özgür Çelik. Following the court's decision, Gürsel Tekin, who announced his departure from the CHP in 2024, was appointed as a trustee to the Istanbul Provincial Presidency.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel announced that Gürsel Tekin had been expelled from the party, and stated that other individuals appointed by the court would also be expelled if necessary.
Among the names temporarily assigned to the Istanbul Provincial Administration by the court, Hasan Babacan and Müjdat Gürbüz announced that they had withdrawn from the administration.
YSK EVALUATED CHP'S OBJECTION
On the other hand, the Supreme Election Council (YSK) convened to evaluate the CHP's objection against the decisions made regarding the cancellation of the congresses to be held by the CHP in some districts of Istanbul. After a two-and-a-half-hour meeting, YSK President Ahmet Yener announced that the congresses would be held.
Yener stated, "The decisions taken by the district election boards of Sarıyer, Tuzla, Bakırköy, Başakşehir, and Ataşehir to halt the ongoing congress process have been lifted due to complete unlawfulness, and it has been decided that the congresses will continue from where they left off."
