Two individuals were detained after public outrage when they attempted to rape a young woman walking in the middle of the street in Beyoğlu, Istanbul. STRONG REACTION FROM AK PARTY MEMBERWhile the incident and the process caused reactions, former AK Party Member of Parliament Şamil Tayyar also targeted the judiciary based on those images. Tayyar stated, "I regret to say, you know how we talk about social decay, the decay in the judiciary is at the top of the list. There are moment-by-moment images of the attack. What more evidence could there be? Then why are you letting them go?" “THEY WERE ARRESTED AFTER THE REACTIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA”AK Party's Şamil Tayyar's statement is as follows; "Two perverts who attempted to rape a woman in Beyoğlu, almost in the middle of a crowd, were initially released by the court and were arrested after the reactions on social media. This change of decision is not the first; there are many examples. While discussing these, sometimes reactions from the judiciary community arise: 'The police are conducting operations, often the file is empty, the judiciary looks at the evidence.' Fair enough. There are moment-by-moment images of the attack. What more evidence could there be? Then why are you letting them go? At that time, it is said, 'Sir, there is no prison sentence for the alleged crime, why should they be arrested?' You arrested them when there was a reaction. This means the legislation is appropriate; it can be done if desired. For a while, there has been pressure on the AK Party, and a new law is being requested on the grounds that 'pressures on social media negatively affect the judiciary.' “THEY MUST BE SUBJECT TO LEGAL OVERSIGHT”I cannot accept the lynch culture on social media; it must definitely be subject to legal oversight, but despite all its shortcomings, it is the most effective oversight mechanism over the judiciary. The judiciary should also do its own accounting. I regret to say, you know how we talk about social decay, the decay in the judiciary is at the top of the list."
