Military chief did not elaborate on nature of plot, parties behind it.

Algerian army has discovered and foiled a plot aimed at destroying the country, military chief said on Wednesday.

Ahmed Gaid Salah was speaking to military officials at the sixth military zone in southern Algeria.

"The army's leadership decided to confront the gang and its despicable plans," he said, adding the military managed to preserve state institutions and its functioning.

The military leader, however, did not elaborate on the nature of the plot or the parties behind it.

Algeria has been in turmoil since President Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepped down on April 2 after 20 years in power, under pressure from mass protests demanding the removal of the ruling elite and the prosecution of people suspected of corruption.

On Sunday, Algeria's interim President Abdelkader Bensalah said the country will hold presidential elections on Dec. 12. -
