The crisis that began with the bombing of Sanaa International Airport in Yemen has completely halted air transportation across the country. The Yemeni Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority announced that all airports in the country have been closed to flights until further notice due to the increased security risk. The decision notably came after tensions escalated following the entry of an Iranian aircraft into Yemeni airspace.
After the bombing of Sanaa International Airport in Yemen, security measures have been raised to the highest level. The Yemen Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority announced that all airports across the country have been closed to air traffic until further notice. It was stated that the decision took effect immediately upon publication, and official notifications were made to international organizations and relevant units in the aviation sector due to escalating tensions in the airspace.
DECISION OFFICIALLY ENTERED INTO FORCE
In the circular published by the Yemen Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority, it was stated that flights have been suspended at all airports nationwide. No timeline was shared regarding when air traffic would resume.
TENSIONS ESCALATED WITH IRANIAN AIRCRAFT
It was noted that the decision was made after an Iranian aircraft entered Yemen's airspace to land at the International Airport in the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa. While the Yemeni government announced that the Iranian plane violated airspace, Defense Minister Tahir al-Uqayli also declared that these violations would be responded to.
Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen claimed that Sanaa Airport was bombed by Saudi Arabia; however, the Yemeni government stated that it targeted the airport runway to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing in Yemen.
It was reported that after the bombardment, the Iranian plane changed its route and headed to Hodeidah Airport in the west of the country, where it landed safely.
