A critical warning has been issued for millions of citizens who share their ID photos or photocopies via WhatsApp and similar applications. The 6-digit CAN Code found on new-generation chip-equipped Turkish Republic ID cards, when falling into the hands of malicious individuals along with other information on the ID, can pose a serious security risk. Experts note that this code can be exploited for transactions such as remotely opening a bank account, applying for credit, or obtaining a new phone line.
The 6-digit CAN Code on the new generation chip-equipped Turkish ID cards has become a target for cyber scammers. Experts stated that citizens who share their ID photos, especially during processes such as car rental, home rental, or second-hand shopping via WhatsApp, may be at great risk.
NOT RISKY ALONE BUT...
Experts noted that the CAN Code cannot be used alone, but if it is obtained together with other information on the ID, it can be misused in digital identity verification processes. It was emphasized that this situation increases the risk of fraud, especially in remote transactions.
BANK ACCOUNT AND PHONE LINE CAN BE OPENED
According to experts, the CAN Code is used for identity verification in banks' remote customer acquisition processes and in GSM operators' new line or e-SIM applications. It was warned that malicious individuals who obtain this code along with ID information may attempt to perform various transactions on behalf of the victim.
DO NOT SEND THE CODE WITHOUT HIDING IT
Cybersecurity experts recommend digitally covering the 6-digit CAN Code if an ID photo needs to be sent via WhatsApp or similar messaging applications. Thus, it is stated that the code can be prevented from falling into the hands of third parties.
IF YOU LOSE YOUR ID, REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY
If the ID is lost, it is recommended to call the Alo 199 Population Call Center without delay or to report the loss via e-Government. In this way, digital certificates belonging to the ID card can be canceled and potential misuse can be prevented.
