Syria's Ministry of Interior announced that retired Major General Adil Issa, who served during the Baath regime era and had an arrest warrant issued against him, was handed over by Lebanese authorities.

In a statement made on the Ministry's social media platform, it was stated that Issa, the Baath regime general against whom a detention order was issued by the Lebanese Court of Cassation's Chief Public Prosecutor upon Syria's extradition request, was handed over to Syrian authorities.

The statement noted that Issa's extradition, who served as Commander of the 17th Division in the former regime's army and as Commander of the Deir ez-Zor Ground Forces until 2016, was carried out through coordination conducted upon the request of the Syrian Republic's Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

AN ARREST WARRANT IN ABSENTIA HAD BEEN ISSUED AGAINST HIM

Pointing out that there was an arrest warrant in absentia issued against Issa by the 7th Investigating Judge, the statement stated that the suspect would be tried for the crimes of "intentional homicide", "facilitating the commission of a serious crime", "intentional killing of multiple people", "torture resulting in death", and "organizing attacks aimed at inciting civil war and sectarian conflict".

HE WILL BE TRIED IN HIS COUNTRY

The statement also expressed that the case file is being reviewed by Damascus's 4th Indictment Judge, and the process for referring the suspect to the Damascus Criminal Court has been initiated.

It was reported that the Lebanese judiciary had decided yesterday to extradite Issa, a general of the ousted Baath regime, to his country to be tried for crimes he committed on Syrian soil.
