It has been reported that a male corpse found in the sea in Trabzon may belong to Mehmet Akkaya, who went missing in the flood in Giresun. The governor's office announced that the body was identified by relatives, and a forensic medicine process has begun for definitive identification.
A male body was found in the sea in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon. It is assessed that the body may belong to Mehmet Akkaya (45), who went missing after being swept away by the current with their vehicle during the flood in Giresun.
TAKEN TO THE FORENSIC MEDICINE INSTITUTE FOR DEFINITIVE IDENTIFICATION
The incident occurred yesterday in the Ortahisar district. Those who noticed the motionless person in the sea reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. Upon the report, health and police teams were dispatched to the area. Under the control of health teams, it was determined that the unidentified person had lost their life. After the examination, the body was taken to the Trabzon Forensic Medicine Institute for identification. While police teams initiated an investigation into the incident, it is assessed that the found body may belong to Mehmet Akkaya, who was swept away by the current and went missing during the flood disaster in Giresun on August 13, and for whom search efforts continue.
STATEMENT FROM THE GIRESUN GOVERNORSHIP
In a written statement made by the Giresun Governorship, it was stated: "Due to the heavy rains experienced in our province on August 13, 2026, as a result of the overflow of the Karabulduk Stream in the Karadere village area of the Keşap district, one of our three citizens in a vehicle that was swept away by the water managed to save themselves, and search and rescue efforts were initiated for our two missing citizens. As a result of the meticulous search activities carried out since the first day, the body of our citizen named Muhammed Abdullah Hakkıoğlu (16) was found by the streamside on August 18, 2026. While search activities continued, the body found in the sea in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon province on August 19, 2026, which is assessed to possibly belong to our other missing citizen Mehmet Akkaya (45), was identified by his relatives, and Forensic Medicine processes have been initiated for definitive identification."
