WATER WELL DUG FOR FRESHWATER SUPPLY

According to a statement from the ministry, the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Assets of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change opened a water well in 2022 in the Lake Tuz Special Environmental Protection Zone to supply freshwater, which is vital for baby flamingos.

Thanks to the well, water was supplied to the nursery area, the main feeding point for flamingo chicks, during critical periods of water stress. This year, due to effective rainfall, there was no need to supplement water to the nursery area.

"OUR FAMILY IS GROWING AT LAKE TUZ"

Minister Murat Kurum also shared images from the lake where the flamingo population is increasing on his social media account, saying, "Our family is growing at Lake Tuz. We have reached the highest number of chicks in the last five years in the protected area. 12,800 baby flamingos have found life at Lake Tuz."

Mustafa Uzun, Head of the Conservation Monitoring and Special Environmental Protection Zones Department of the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Assets, stated in the images that Lake Tuz is a unique habitat for flamingos as a saline wetland.

Reminding that the ministry protects Lake Tuz under the Special Environmental Protection Zone status, Uzun stated that they carry out all necessary efforts to protect all living beings, including flamingos, as well as threatened and endangered bird species, animals, and endemic plants in this region.

Uzun emphasized that the number of chicks is in a very good state this year and noted:

"Last year, due to drought, our chick count was quite low. But thankfully, this year the rainfall is at the required levels. Therefore, the number of chicks this year has reached the highest levels seen in the last five years. We detected approximately 12,800 chicks through studies conducted by the academicians and technical teams assigned to our project. We have no deficiencies in terms of feeding the chicks. Towards the end of the year, the chicks begin preparations for migration. Until that period, we continue our monitoring efforts without interruption."
