Experts have warned that using a hair dryer in the bathroom immediately after a shower poses serious risks of electric shock. Dr. Umut Elbir from Istanbul Bilgi University stated that the combination of a humid environment, wet floor, and electrical devices increases the danger, and advised that hair dryers should be used in a dry setting whenever possible.
Dr. Umut Elbir, Head of the Property Protection and Security Department at Istanbul Bilgi University, stated that the risk of using electrical devices in the bathroom does not only stem from the device itself, but is also determined by environmental conditions.
"WET SKIN REDUCES THE BODY'S RESISTANCE TO ELECTRIC CURRENT" Elbir said, “After a shower, the humidity level in the bathroom rises, and the floor and body may be wet. Wet skin reduces the body's resistance to electric current. Therefore, a contact that might seem minor under normal conditions can become much more dangerous in a wet environment.”
"HAIR DRYER SHOULD BE USED IN A DRY ROOM" Elbir, noting that using a hair dryer near a sink, bathtub, or puddles increases the risk, stated that situations such as the device falling into water, touching a socket with wet hands, or using it with a damaged cable can cause electric shock.
Elbir gave the following warnings to citizens: “If possible, the hair dryer should be used in a dry room, not in the bathroom. Hands and feet must be thoroughly dried before use. The device should be kept away from the sink, bathtub, and wet floor. Devices with damaged cables must never be used. Having a residual current device in homes is also vital.”
According to experts, for safe use of electrical devices, it is not enough for the device to be intact. The environment where the device is used must also be dry, safe, and free from water contact.
"A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF HOME ACCIDENTS START WITH SMALL NEGLIGENCES" Dr. Umut Elbir stated, “A significant portion of home accidents starts with small negligences. When using electrical devices in the bathroom, it's not just about the hair dryer; it involves the wet floor, humidity, socket, cable, and human contact all together. Therefore, a simple precaution can prevent a serious accident.”
