Chickpea harvest has begun in the Kozan district of Adana. Chickpeas are finding buyers at 30-35 Turkish Lira per kilogram in the field.
Chickpea harvest has started in Adana, one of Turkey's most important agricultural production centers. With state incentives, chickpeas planted on approximately 20,000 decares of land in the Kozan district have become an alternative crop for farmers, yielding an average of 100 kilograms per decare.
FIRST PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET
Although the official price for chickpeas has not been announced, the first products are currently finding buyers between 30-35 lira per kilogram in the field. Producers stated that the excessive rainfall this year negatively affected the yield.
Muhammed Kurt, who produces chickpeas on 15 decares of land in the Narlıören and Bağözü neighborhoods of the district, stated that chickpea cultivation in the region has increased in recent years due to incentives.
100 KILOS PER DECARE
Kurt said, "In our region, alongside barley, wheat, and sunflowers, we have been cultivating chickpeas as an alternative crop for the last 3-4 years. This year, there has been a slight decrease in yield due to excessive rainfall, but the product quality is quite good. The official price has not been announced yet. It is said to be around 35-40 TL. Last year, our product found buyers at 30-32 TL in the field. In the free market, roasted chickpeas sell at much higher prices. The actual profit is made by the seller. We expect a yield of about 100 kilograms per decare. The chickpeas are full, and we are grateful for that."
"EXCESSIVE RAINFALL REDUCED YIELD"
Producer Muharrem Kayhan also stated that excessive rainfall reduced the yield, saying, "This year, due to the rainfall, the yield is lower compared to previous years. However, thanks to the support provided by the Kozan District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, producers have turned to chickpea cultivation. Producers were provided with seed support of approximately 300 to 500 kilograms depending on their cultivated area."
