Images shared by open-source defense analysts have reinforced assessments that the J-36 program has entered a new phase in its development process. At the same time, it has been suggested that the sixth prototype is also on the production line and may be preparing for tests.
CRITICAL STEP IN THE SIXTH-GENERATION FIGHTER JET RACE
Although its official name has not been confirmed by China, the aircraft, referred to as "J-36" in military circles, is being developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. The aircraft first appeared publicly in December 2024 and has since drawn attention with regular flight tests. Experts note that the program is one of the most significant initiatives competing with the US NGAD (Next Generation Air Dominance) project.
STANDS OUT WITH ITS NOTABLE DESIGN
The J-36 differs from current fifth-generation fighter jets with its tailless airframe, three-engine design, and wide diamond-shaped wing structure. The aircraft aims for low radar observability, long-range mission capability, and high payload capacity. Analysts assess that the design is being developed for air superiority, deep strike, and command-and-control missions capable of managing unmanned aerial vehicles.

Images obtained during flight tests reveal various revisions in exhaust systems, air intakes, and airframe details among prototypes. According to experts, these changes indicate that China is trying to optimize performance and stealth features before serial production.

Defense circles assess that if the program maintains its current pace, the J-36 could join the Chinese Air Force inventory before 2029. However, the Beijing government has not made any official statement regarding the aircraft's technical specifications or entry into service timeline.
