A business in Alanya, Antalya, has started charging an extra 20 TL from customers who request their drinks without ice. A notice posted at the cash register claimed that more product is used to fill the glass when ice is not added. This move, which quickly spread on social media and divided consumers, has sparked debates over "service standards" and "opportunism."
A notice hung on the customer counter of a business operating in the Alanya district of Antalya ignited a major debate on social media and among consumers. The business's move to start charging extra fees from customers who prefer their drinks without ice quickly became a trending topic.
THE CONTROVERSIAL SIGN WAS PLACED ON THE COUNTER
A business providing service in the district placed an eye-catching information notice on the glass partition right next to its cash register. The clearly visible sign stated in bold letters, "A PRICE DIFFERENCE OF 20 TL IS CHARGED FOR DRINKS WITHOUT ICE." Customers arriving at the counter to place their orders encountered this unexpected extra cost.
BUSINESS DEFENDS COSTS: "MORE PRODUCT IS USED"
After customers reacted to the situation and the matter spread on social media, attention turned to the business's justification. The business defended the practice with a small text at the bottom of the sign, stating the following:
"When you prefer your drink without ice, more product is used, therefore a price difference of 20 TL is applied. Thank you for your understanding!"
SOCIAL MEDIA DIVIDES CONSUMERS
Once the image of the practice was shared online, it was flooded with comments. Some consumers agreed with the business, noting that ice fills the volume of the cup and is used as a "trick" by businesses, and that when no ice is added, more raw material (tea, milk, syrup) must be used to fill the cup completely. However, the majority of respondents labeled this as "profiteering," arguing that whether a standard portion of drink is with or without ice should not reflect such a significant price difference.
