The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit to seize a $30 million mansion allegedly belonging to Mansur Barzani. The property is claimed to have been purchased with bribery proceeds.
The US Department of Justice has filed a forfeiture lawsuit against the luxury mansion in Beverly Hills reportedly belonging to Mansour Barzani, a prominent figure in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of Iraq. The property, valued at approximately $30 million, is alleged to have been purchased with proceeds from bribery and fraud.
30 MILLION DOLLAR MANSION IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Peshmerga Special Forces Commander Mansour Barzani is said to have purchased the mansion in 2018 for $20 million, later spending about $10 million on renovations. The total value of the property is estimated at $30 million, with its current market value reportedly around $28.5 million.
BRIBERY ALLEGATION INCLUDED IN THE FILE
According to the case file, Barzani is accused of taking bribes from a Virginia-based defense company doing business with the US Department of Defense. The company allegedly paid Barzani $0.25 per liter to avoid losing a $700 million contract for jet fuel supply at Erbil International Airport. This method is said to have generated "hundreds of millions of dollars" in illicit gains.
"PURCHASED WITH BRIBE FUNDS"
Authorities stated that part of the proceeds were transferred to a fund belonging to Barzani, and the mansion was purchased through this fund. The property is reported to include four bedrooms and eight bathrooms, spanning a total area of 930 square meters.
COURT DECISION PENDING
The US Department of Justice seeks forfeiture of the property if it is proven to have been acquired with criminal proceeds. While the case has not yet concluded, the final decision is expected to be made by a federal court.
