As the energy crisis deepens in the Caribbean, widespread power outages have occurred in much of Cuba. Millions of people were left in the dark in many cities, including the capital Havana.
DAILY LIFE AT A STANDSTILL
Authorities announced that there was a serious disruption in the electricity grid across a wide area from the west of the country to its center. The outage brought daily life to a standstill in many cities stretching from Havana to Camagüey.
OUTAGE MAY LAST UP TO 20 HOURS A DAY
According to experts, the power outages in Cuba are due to fuel shortages and an aging energy infrastructure. A recent decrease in oil supply has also severely affected energy production. Authorities warned that due to the deepening energy crisis in the country, outages could continue for up to 12-20 hours a day.
The Cuban Electric Union (UNE) stated that teams are working to fix the malfunction and that the goal is to gradually restore electricity.
