Turkey's Central Bank (TCMB) President Fatih Karahan, who went to the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Planning and Budget Commission to make a presentation regarding recent activities, faced protests from CHP deputies.
WELCOMED WITH 200 LIRA AND 5 EURO
CHP Malatya Deputy Veli Ağbaba reacted to Karahan by holding up a 5 Euro and a 200 TL banknote. Ağbaba stated, "The smallest currency of the European Union has become more valuable than Turkey's largest banknote. The Turkish lira has lost all its credibility." He claimed that the Central Bank has lost its independence, saying, "A non-independent Central Bank has the second highest interest rate in the world." Ağbaba continued his remarks as follows: "The reputation of a country is its currency, its passport. With our 200 TL currency, you cannot buy a kilo of bones. All the efforts made over the past two years have gone to waste."
"WE WILL TALK"
After the protest, Karahan responded to Ağbaba, saying, "We will talk." Commission Chairman and AK Party Samsun Deputy Mehmet Muş gave a 10-minute break to the meeting before it even started following the incident.
